Its me Baguio-Lion

The lion's head along Kennon Road is the undisputed landmark that is synonymous to Baguio City. It is commonly said that a trip to Baguio City would not be complete without taking home a souvenir photograph with the famous lion head which serves as the backdrop on Kennon Road.

Local and foreign tourists make it a point to stop in Camp 6 and have their photographs taken at the base of the lion head. The 40-foot high lion head, located a few kilometers from the Kennon Road view deck, was carved by a Cordillera artist from a limestone boulder. Lions Club members of Baguio City thought of creating a symbol that would proclaim the presence of the group in this mountain resort city.

Just beside the lion head are a few small stalls that sell woodcarving and other native handicraft. Softdrinks and light snacks are also sold to visitors who take time to stop and take a break after the 45-minute drive up Kennon Road. The vendors have enjoyed high sales since this popular landmark was constructed. (Text Hawaiian Webmaster)

MANILA, Philippines – Four victims of the Irisan "trashslide" were laid to rest in Baguio City on Friday. Siblings Revuller, 13, Apolinario, 10, and Frando Flores,15 and their grandmother Antonia Tacio, 68, were killed when a retaining wall of the Irisan dumpsite collapsed, causing an avalanche of garbage to fall on their home.Modesto Flores, father of the 3 victims, was allowed by the court on Friday to temporarily leave jail to attend the funeral.Flores  wife, Sharon, arrived on Thursday from Malaysia, where she is employed as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW). Sharon did not make amends with his estranged husband.
Hindi ko maiwasan na manisi kasi kung nandiyan ka sana e alam mo naman siguro ang ginawa mo. Baka sakaling may magawa ka pa,  she said. Meanwhile, Baguio officials are still in dispute over the garbage disposal situation in Baguio City. Former Baguio City Mayor Reynaldo Bautista said he is trying to implement a 10-year ecological solid waste management plan.  Unfortunately, ang naka-upo ngayon ay nagsabi na makakalabas ng solusyon sa ating problema ng basura,  said Bautista. Current Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the agreement with the local government of Urdaneta City in Pangasinan to accommodate Baguio garbage failed to materialize due to protests.  Nag-sign kami ng agreement with Mayor Perez, we entered into the agreeement of P1,000 per ton, then I learned this morning na nagkaproblema raw dahil may mga nago-object,  said Domogan. Two garbage trucks from Baguio City were apprehended by authorities Thursday night for attempting to throw garbage in a dumpsite in Urdaneta City. The workers may face charges for violating the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and trespassing. -- Report from Maira Wallis, ABS-CBN North Luzon
